Scholarship Fund

In 2010, a special rider, Merete, lost her battle with cancer. Her legacy lives on through the Merete Larson Scholarship Fund, which ensures Free Rein's services are available regardless of a participant's ability to pay.

About Merete

Merete Larson was a shining star from the moment she was born, with a smile that could melt hearts and a natural ability to befriend anyone. Diagnosed with cancer at age 2, she faced the disease with bravery and determination, supported by her family, friends, and medical professionals. At age 13, a stroke left her with paralysis on her left side and in a wheelchair, presenting new challenges. Undeterred, Merete approached this fight with the same courage and resilience, discovering a love for horses and beginning her journey with Free Rein alongside her parents.

Her mom says, "I cannot tell you what a gift Free Rein was to my daughter and to our whole family. Having lost so much in the instant of the stroke, it was an incredible thing to see her gaining new skills, strength, and confidence through her time at Free Rein. She delighted in her new hobby, and each week she looked forward to her lessons at the barn. Even on the weeks when she had chemotherapy and was fatigued and nauseous, she was determined to ride or at least be with her horse. The horses and the people in the program provided a calm and fun place for her to be. I saw firsthand the health, hope, and happiness that Free Rein provided."

Unfortunately, Merete lost her battle with cancer three years later. The mighty warrior had fought the good fight. Alongside her in that fight remained her trusted Free Rein horses and instructors.
